Mission Statement

Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts stands as one of the contemporary art world’s unique institutions. For twenty five years we have invited artists into our print shop to collaborate on monotype suites. Our commitment is to facilitating the creation of art in a new medium for the artist and to further the artist's artistic vision. Our prints are one of a kind works on paper. We focus on the individual piece as opposed to multiples. Monotype is called “the painterly print” because the artist creates an image on the plate, which is then run through the press. The image on the plate transfers to the paper and cannot be reproduced again;it is a unique image. The plate allows the artist more scope for technique than is possible on paper or canvas. It encourages wiping away, over printing and retention of the full power of the pigment because the paint does not sink into the plate's surface; but it also applies certain limitations. A monotype must be completed in one go, or one session, thus these "prints" retain a freshness and immediacy often not possible in other mediums.

Cheryl Pelavin, Brian Pilliod

Our gallery exhibits the major works of our artists; painting, sculpture and installation along side of the works created in our shop. Quality is foremost in our selection of art.

Our collaborations with artists last for as long as possible. The original goal was to work with an artist throughout his or her working career. Many of our artists started to work with Cheryl Pelavin in 1983 and still continue to do so now.

Ms Pelavin was originally master printer and collaborator; since 2000 Brian Pilliod has been our master printer. Pelavin and Pilliod now collaborate together with the artists on monotype projects.

We are very proud of our accomplishments and our artists’ work. We are thrilled to be able to share a large part of our inventory with you on this website.

Whether the artist is young and emerging or mid-career and established, our goal is always to bring exciting work to the public and share it our viewers and collectors. I believe our artists work wonders, it is a priviledge to offer these pieces to you.

Please call us for a visit to see our work in person, and if we can we will take you into the shop so that you can see the artist in action.
